Our approach to transfers
Has anyone else found our approach to transfers a little bit amateurish over the last 6 weeks?

It's no secret that we are after a top striker, but we seem to be going for the scattergum approach again, which very rarely works. First we were looking at Benteke, then Bony, then Lacazette, then Batshuayi, then Mario Gomez, then Janssen and now we are almost back to square one and sniffing around Van Persie. It's almost as thought we don't really know what we need.

Do we need a pacy, big strong front man like Batshuayi, or do we need a less mobile front man that is much better in the air like Benteke, or do we need a mixture of both like Lacazette. Surely we know the type of system we are looking to play, and we should be finding players that suit our system rather than getting whichever player bites first, and then trying to build a system after that.

Our early summer free transfers have been excellent business, but we've known since last Summer that we really needed a top draw striker. We should have highlighted 1 or 2 players that we were going to go all out for, and paid whatever necessary (within reason) to get one of them. If Batshuayi was that man then we should have made a proper bid from the offset and got the deal done. He's ended up moving for about £35m so well within our price range, and Chelsea wouldn't have been in a position to compete as their new manager was tied up at the Euros and cant imagine he would have wanted to sanction any deal of that value. I really think we've missed a trick here. We've lost him to Chelsea, looks likely that we'll lose Lacazette to Arsenal, Janssen is going to Spurs, Benteke to Palace and we are left in a very difficult position.

I'd like to see a much more targeted approach to our transfers, a la Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd. Pick a player, make the decision that he is the one we want and go all out to get him.

Bilic has my trust and support

What are these "transfers" of what you speak?

Re: Our approach to transfers
everybody within football knows about who is bidding for who, chairmen, agents etc talk and will always leak the bid in the hope of generating more interest. it is very rare that a transfer ever goes through that is a surprise to people within the game.

It can be a bit cringey with some of the stuff that comes out at the club and granted certain people could play their cards a little closer to their chests, but in all honesty, I think we have very little to grumble about regarding transfers for the last 2-3 seasons.

We've done great.

... and even if the agent didn't know about the bid (which he would), it's in the best interests of the selling club to make the bid public.

Re: Our approach to transfers
The player agent would presumably know about it.

It's in his best interests to get that bid made public.

100% agree - keep the business private and announce when a deal is done. Of course agents will leak, but in my mind don't show your hand until it's confirmed.

This Innsider rubbish on the website, I know it says the person isn't the views of someone at West Ham and it is done to drive traffic to the website, but what's the point, gives away all your targets and then lets others know your business.

Re: Our approach to transfers

"Annoucing to the world we were prepared to spent 30m on a striker was stupid"

How else do you expect us to bid on players like Lacazette and Batshuayi without revealing how much you're prepared to bid?

---

You can make a £30m bid for a player by just submitting a private bid of £30m for a player. No one needs to know about it other than the club for the player you are making the bid for.

I still don't understand what the suggestions are for an alternative to what the club are doing? Offering for less players? How would that help, other than risking the chances of missing out totally?

As most in the media (and hence the "well informed" wider world) see us as barrow-owning wide boys, I think it's an excellent strategy to propel that view and exploit it to the max.

Let the world feel we're being run by a couple of spivs and a washed-up barmaid - seems like they fall for it time & time again, eh, Dimitri?

Read somewhere that we'd put in bids for 10 strikers/players and thought this scattergun approach bizarre but they know best and as we're often being reminded they have done well over the past couple of windows

You take it for what it is, and that bollocks?

So Sullivan is lying is he? You view (genuinely) is that we didn't have 5 bids on the table and it was all a lie?

My word.

Of course I read it but unlike you I take it all for what it is and that's usury bollox.

Bolt - no one is pissing themselves from what I can see.

Just because an objection is raised to our approach to transfers doesn't mean anyone is pissing themselves. It's merely an observation that had we been more targeted in our approach to recruitment it may have yielded better results.

That doesn't even make sense. Clearly you had forgotten that the owner had publically stated we'd made 5 different bids, realised it's made you look a silly cunt so tried to suggest I wear nappies.

There isn't a single premier league club that can't spend 20 to 30 million on a striker, given that every club will be getting at least 100 million

People started chucking up the prices to premier league clubs tye second the TV deal was announced

People have short memories.

We've signed some excellent young players, as well as it only being the early part of the pre season and people are pissing themselves over our lack of transfers but oversee the signings we've already made and the signings we made last season.

I won't be reading this as it's the same drivel that's been said many times before, but I hope you don't lose any sleep over it.
